A23 Streatham Hill overnight closures: dates Norbury travellers should check

TfL’s current A23 Streatham Hill works advice lists overnight closures on several August dates, including southbound closures from Sunday 16 to Wednesday 19 August and on Sunday 23 August. Norbury residents heading north should check before travelling.

This is a practical follow-up to the Gazette’s June report on the A23 Streatham Hill improvement works. TfL’s current works page now lists specific August overnight closure dates for resurfacing, alongside continuing lane restrictions and temporary traffic signals.

Overnight closure dates listed by TfL

TfL says overnight closures on Streatham Hill for resurfacing works are scheduled between 21:00 and 05:30 on the following dates:

Sunday 9 August to Wednesday 12 August 2026: northbound
Thursday 13 August 2026: southbound
Sunday 16 August to Wednesday 19 August 2026: southbound
Sunday 23 August 2026: southbound

Residents should check TfL’s page before setting off, as roadworks and diversions can change at short notice.

Why it matters for Norbury

The works are north of Norbury, but the A23 is a common route for journeys towards Streatham, Brixton and central London. Delays or overnight diversions around Streatham Hill may affect car, taxi, delivery and some bus journeys from the Norbury area.

TfL also says there are lane restrictions in both directions between the junction with Sternhold Avenue on Streatham Hill and the junction with Holmewood Road on Brixton Hill. Temporary traffic signals are listed until 1 September, and again from Monday 28 September until late 2026.

Practical checks before travelling

If your journey uses the A23 through Streatham Hill overnight, check the latest TfL advice and allow extra time.
If you are travelling north from Norbury and do not need to stop in Streatham or Brixton, compare alternative routes before setting off.
If using buses through Streatham, check live bus status and any notices at stops, especially during overnight closure periods.
If walking or cycling near the works area, follow signed local diversions rather than assuming the usual route is open.

TfL says the wider A23 Streatham Hill project is due to finish in spring 2027 and is intended to provide a new permanent road layout with protected cycle lanes and dedicated bus lanes in both directions.
