Tuesday 12 May 2026 — Norbury residents who drive, take buses or cycle through Streatham Hill should allow extra time while Transport for London continues major works on the A23.
TfL says it is building a new permanent road layout for the A23 Streatham Hill, including protected cycle lanes and dedicated bus lanes in both directions. The transport authority says the scheme is intended to improve bus reliability and make walking and cycling easier and safer in the area.
The works are due to finish in spring 2027, according to TfL’s project travel advice.
Where restrictions apply
TfL says lane restrictions are in place in both directions on the A23 between the junction with Holmewood Road on A23 Brixton Hill and the junction with Sternhold Avenue on A23 Streatham Hill.
For Norbury readers, this is particularly relevant for journeys heading north through Streatham towards Brixton, Clapham, central London or onward bus and Tube connections.
What TfL advises
- Driving: journeys on the A23 Streatham Hill and surrounding roads will take longer during the works.
- Local trips: TfL advises people to walk or cycle where possible, and to allow more time if driving or taking the bus.
- Non-stopping journeys: TfL says drivers who would normally use the A23 Streatham Hill but do not need to stop in the area should reroute, using the A24 or A3 instead.
- Parking and loading: parking along the A23 beside the works will be suspended, with some loading bays unavailable and restrictions applying to others.
- Overnight closures: TfL says overnight closures will be needed at times and details will be published nearer the time.
Buses and cycling
TfL says buses through the Streatham area will use their normal routes during lane restrictions, but will follow diversions during overnight closures. Some bus stops may be moved or closed on Streatham Hill at times.
Bus journeys on the A23 and surrounding roads are likely to take longer during peak hours, particularly on routes listed by TfL including 2, 50, 60, 249, 250, 255, 319, 147, 432 and 468.
For cycling, TfL says signed diversion routes will be provided throughout the works, with routes intended to be safer and quieter than cycling through the works area on the A23.
What to check before travelling
Before setting out, residents should check the latest information through TfL’s A23 Streatham Hill works travel advice, TfL traffic updates and the TfL Journey Planner or TfL Go app. TfL says local Tube and rail services are not affected by these road works, but road and bus journeys may take longer.
The practical message for Norbury is simple: if your journey depends on Streatham Hill or buses running through it, check the current position and leave more time.
