Published Thursday 4 June 2026. Norbury residents who travel north through Streatham should allow extra time and check routes before setting off, as Transport for London works on the A23 Streatham Hill are due to continue until spring 2027.

The works are not in Norbury itself, but they affect a key northbound corridor used by some SW16 residents travelling towards Streatham, Brixton and central London by road or bus.

What TfL says is happening

TfL says it is working on a new permanent road layout for the A23 Streatham Hill. The project includes protected cycle lanes and dedicated bus lanes in both directions, with the aim of improving bus reliability and making walking and cycling easier and safer in the area.

The section covered by the works is between Sternhold Avenue and Holmewood Road. TfL says work started in summer 2025 and is due to finish in spring 2027.

Current travel impacts to check

On its major works page, TfL says there are lane restrictions in both directions on the A23, between the junction with Holmewood Road on A23 Brixton Hill and the junction with Sternhold Avenue on A23 Streatham Hill.

TfL also says overnight closures will be needed at times, with details to be published nearer the time when confirmed.

For people driving locally, TfL advises allowing more time, checking before travel and noting that parking along the A23 alongside the works will be suspended. For longer journeys that would normally use A23 Streatham Hill but do not need to stop in the area, TfL suggests rerouting via the A24 or A3, or considering rail and Tube options.

Buses likely to take longer at busy times

TfL says buses through the Streatham area will operate their normal routes during lane restrictions, although some bus stops may be moved or closed on Streatham Hill at times. Information should be available at affected stops.

The TfL page says bus journeys on the A23 and surrounding roads are likely to take longer during peak hours, particularly on routes 2, 50, 60, 249, 250, 255, 319, 147, 432 and 468.

Not all of those services are Norbury routes, but disruption around Streatham Hill can matter to residents making connections through Streatham, Brixton or nearby parts of south London.

Practical steps for Norbury residents

  • Check TfL’s A23 Streatham Hill works page before using the corridor.
  • Allow extra time for bus, taxi, delivery or car journeys through Streatham Hill.
  • Look for temporary bus stop notices if boarding or changing in Streatham.
  • Use TfL Journey Planner or TfL Go to compare public transport, walking and cycling options.
  • If driving through without stopping, check whether the A24 or A3 is a better route for that journey.
