Norbury Park Lawn Tennis Club (NPLTC) has launched a new, fully funded "Walking Tennis" initiative, designed to make the sport accessible to all members of the local SW16 community, regardless of age, physical fitness, or prior experience.

Starting Monday, 14 September 2026, and running through to 19 October 2026, the six-week program takes place every Monday afternoon from 14:30 to 15:30. Held at the club's historic grounds at 55 Ederline Avenue, the course is completely free for participants, with all equipment provided under the guidance of a qualified Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) coach.

What is Walking Tennis?

Walking Tennis is a modified, slower-paced version of the traditional game. The key difference is simple: no running or jumping is allowed. Players are also permitted to let the ball bounce twice before hitting it, making the game much easier to learn, less physically demanding on the joints, and highly social.

According to the LTA, the format is ideal for older adults, individuals recovering from injuries, or anyone looking to ease back into physical activity in a welcoming, pressure-free environment. The sessions cater to all skill levels, from complete beginners to returning players.

How to Participate

The program is open to anyone aged 16 and over. Because the initiative is fully funded, spots are free but limited, making advance booking essential. Local residents can register for the remaining sessions through the official LTA play portal or contact the course coordinator, David Lovejoy, directly at [email protected].

For Norbury residents looking to keep active as autumn approaches, this walking tennis scheme offers a perfect bridge between physical wellbeing and community connection right on the edge of Norbury Park.
