Local grassroots campaign group Litter Free Norbury has reached a major milestone in its ongoing mission to tidy up the neighbourhood. According to data shared by the group, its dedicated volunteers successfully collected and bagged more than 1,000 bags of litter across the streets of Norbury SW16 during the first half of 2026.

A Community-Driven Triumph

Founded by local resident Tony Hooker, who has lived in the area for over two decades, Litter Free Norbury has been actively tackling fly-tipping, overflowing bins, and litter issues. The milestone of 1,000 rubbish bags represents hundreds of hours of dedicated community service by local residents who take to the streets, including during the group's regular "Clean Streets Saturday" initiatives.

As part of their work, volunteers not only pick up rubbish but also log fly-tips and full street bins directly through official council channels, such as Croydon Council's Love Clean Streets application. In addition to bagging litter, the group has reported thousands of individual fly-tipping incidents to help prompt official clean-ups.

Collaborating for a Cleaner High Street

Litter Free Norbury has previously worked alongside Croydon Council as part of local 'blitz' tidy campaigns to restore civic pride along London Road and adjacent high streets. While the challenge of illegal waste disposal and fly-tipping remains persistent, the group's continuous presence has offered a practical and positive outlet for residents looking to take direct action to improve their local environment.

"Taking action as a community makes a massive difference," the group has noted.

Local residents interested in joining the weekly clean-ups or reporting high street problems can get involved through the group’s community channels or join the Saturday morning litter picks.
