Published Monday 22 June 2026. Norbury residents who use the A23 corridor towards Streatham Hill, Brixton or central London should plan ahead for a new phase of Transport for London works starting at the end of June.

This is a follow-up to the Gazette’s earlier general guide to the A23 Streatham Hill works. TfL has now confirmed more specific timings for phase four of the scheme, including overnight closures and lane restrictions.

What changes from 29 June

According to a TfL update published on 17 June, phase four work begins on Monday 29 June. TfL says this phase includes construction of new central islands as part of a wider project to add protected cycle lanes, new pedestrian crossings and continuous bus lanes.

Before the daytime restrictions begin, TfL says overnight closures will take place between 22:00 on Sunday 28 June and 05:00 on Tuesday 30 June between Christchurch Road and Sternhold Avenue. The closures are listed as two separate nights: Sunday night into Monday morning for the southern section from Sternhold Avenue to Telford Avenue, and Monday night into Tuesday morning for the northern section from Telford Avenue to Christchurch Road.

From 05:00 on Monday 29 June until August 2026, TfL says traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction. Daytime works for this phase are expected to finish by 9 August, followed by overnight resurfacing later in August.

Why it matters for Norbury

The works are north of Norbury, but the A23 is a key route for some local journeys towards Streatham, Brixton and central London. Delays around Streatham Hill can also affect bus and car trips that connect with wider south London routes.

TfL says people travelling in the area should plan ahead and allow more time. It also says there will be temporary changes including bus stop relocations, side road closures, pedestrian diversions and parking suspensions.

Practical checks before travelling

  • Check TfL’s current travel advice before using the A23 through Streatham Hill.
  • Allow extra time for bus, taxi, delivery and car journeys heading north from Norbury.
  • Look out for temporary bus stop notices if boarding or changing in Streatham.
  • If driving through the area without stopping, compare possible alternative routes before setting off.
  • For walking and cycling trips near the works, follow posted pedestrian and cycle diversions.
