A major regeneration scheme is set to transform the St Helens Green Triangle in Norbury, marking a significant investment in SW16's public realm. The works, funded by the UK Government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), represent a collaborative effort to rejuvenate localized high streets and green spaces across Croydon.

Boosting Community Pride in SW16

The St Helens Green Triangle, a prominent but historically underutilized pocket of green space situated just off Norbury’s bustling main high street, will undergo extensive physical upgrades. Under the newly finalized plans, the area will receive complete resurfacing of its pedestrian pathways, accompanied by a targeted horticultural scheme introducing fresh seasonal planting, shrubs, and native flora. Additional street furniture, including robust wooden seating, is slated for installation to encourage community dwell time and improve local accessibility.

Local residents have long advocated for minor improvements to this key junction. The upcoming works are expected to begin on-site in January 2026, offering a refreshed, welcoming gateway into the surrounding residential avenues and nearby Green Lane shopping parade.

Part of a Wider Borough Investment

The Norbury improvements are funded via a £600,000 allocation designated strictly for physical district center enhancements. This capital is split across four key Croydon districts: Norbury, Addiscombe, South Croydon, and Coulsdon. This district-specific funding is a core component of a broader £1.4 million UKSPF package managed in London by the Greater London Authority (GLA), focused on boosting local business productivity, reinforcing high street identity, and reviving neighborhood public squares.

A spokesperson for Croydon Council indicated that these physical changes are designed to support local footfall by making neighborhood centers more aesthetically pleasing, accessible, and safe. "Investing in physical infrastructure like the St Helens Green Triangle is a vital step toward restoring localized civic pride and supporting the independent traders who form the backbone of the Norbury economy," the council noted.

Practical Timeline for Residents

The bulk of the ground preparation and landscaping at the Green Triangle is scheduled to take place in early 2026. While minor pedestrian diversions are anticipated around the perimeter of the triangle during the resurfacing phase, high street traffic is expected to remain largely unaffected. Traders on London Road and nearby Green Lane have welcomed the news, citing a long-standing need for enhanced street maintenance and visible local investment.
