An ambitious plan to transform the long-vacant former Norbury pub building at 1326–1328 London Road into a thriving multi-use community hub called the “Norbury Complex” (also referred to as the Norbury Hive) is moving forward. The historic building, once a prominent high street fixture, is set for extensive refurbishment to establish a modern community events hall and dining facilities on the ground floor, alongside tuition rooms, meeting spaces, and senior and youth clubs on the upper floor.
Restoring an Iconic High Street Landmark
For several years, the landmark building has stood empty, sparking concerns about high street decline in Norbury. Under the newly advanced proposals, the original character of the brick facade will be carefully preserved and restored, breathing new life into the streetscape of London Road. The project is led by London Road Norbury Ltd and has generated strong resident interest since early public consultations in 2025.
Local community group Norbury Hive has previously involved schools, youth organisations, and artists in designing hoarding artwork for the site, demonstrating a strong appetite for local involvement. The developer has confirmed that the renewed complex will serve as an inclusive, flexible space for local groups to meet, hold classes, and access support services.
Refurbishing the Upper and Ground Floors
The detailed blueprints for the site division outline a major internal reconfiguration:
- Ground Floor: Dedicated to a large, flexible events and performance hall, public café/dining facilities, and open reception space.
- First Floor: Designed to house a dedicated tuition and training centre, a seniors’ social club, a youth activities space, and multiple private meeting rooms.
The dual focus on youth and senior citizens aims to address a long-standing shortage of designated community activity hubs within the immediate SW16 boundary.
